Week of 2/12/06
The Final Lap remembers Dale Earnhardt On the 5 year anniversary of Dale Earnhardt's death on February 18th, 2001 I wanted to express some thoughts about the legend.
The Final Lap broadcast it's first show back 2003, and the name of our show came about partially from Dale's 'Final Lap.' Many things happened on that first race of the 2001 season. We lost a legend no doubt, and the sport we love has undoubtedly changed in many ways since his death. Safety being the major change of course. Countless innovations came about after losing a NASCAR great, the HANS device, SAFER barriers, and the 'Car of Tormorrow' coming in 2007.
NASCAR has seen amazing popularity with the sport boasting 75 million fans, second most popular sport on TV, and of course #1 spectator sport. It's becoming such a mainstream sport, that I heard Olympic commentators comparing Snowboard Cross (racing) with NASCAR's high banked tracks. It was a pretty cool moment to hear that. NASCAR drivers are rock stars in their own right now, with their collectibles (something Dale pioneered) generating billions in revenue.
The Final Lap remembers Dale in it's name, as well as the excitement that comes from that single lap in every race we watch.
Take a moment during the 500 to remember Dale Earnhardt, who has forever changed this sport while he was here, and continues to do so.
Sincerely,
Kerry Murphey The Final Lap February 18, 2006

NASCAR to start policing 'Slam Drafting' Tony Stewart got his way, at least partially. NASCAR will begin policing the action known as "bump drafting" starting tomorrow in the Duels, and for the rest of this weekend. It'll now be a judgment call made by NASCAR spotters placed in the turns of the speedway, and NASCAR race control. This could make things interesting this weekend, since it's not a black and white call whether or not any particular bump draft was dangerous in the eyes of NASCAR. February 14, 2006
'Ricky Bobby' to make you wear a lapel pin Actor Will Farrell has been named the official spokesman for Nascar Day 2006 on May 19th. Will has a new NASCAR comedy coming out later this year called Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. So wear you lapel pin proudly. February 14, 2006
T. Labonte's carburetor problems With all the focus on Jimmie Johnson's qualification problems, what happened with Terry Labonte's #96 car for Hall of Fame Racing? They got busted for a carburetor modification and Terry's time was disallowed. Since HOF Racing gets their engines ready to go from Joe Gibbs Racing, it's not really thief fault. Word is JD Gibbs is sick to his stomach about this as JGR has never had an engine infraction, and JD has apologized and will pay any fines. February 14, 2006

Chad Knaus tossed from 2006 Daytona 500 Activities DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR announced today that NASCAR Nextel Cup Series crew chief Chad Knaus has been ejected from any further participation in 2006 Daytona 500 activities as a result of a rules infraction discovered following pole qualifying runs Sunday.
Knaus is the crew chief for the No. 48 Chevrolet driven by Jimmie Johnson.
NASCAR said the 48 car failed post-qualifying template inspection in the rear window area. The qualifying time posted by the 48 was disallowed and Johnson will have to start at the rear of the field in the first of two 150-mile qualifying races Thursday.
The qualifying time of the No. 96 Chevrolet driven by Terry Labonte was also disallowed. NASCAR officials said an unapproved carburetor was found on the 96 car. Labonte will also have to start from the rear of the field in Thursday’s qualifying races.
Additional penalties for both cars will be determined following the Daytona 500. February 13, 2006
Hendrick responds to Knaus penalties CONCORD, N.C. (Feb. 13, 2006) - Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick today responded to NASCAR sanctions levied against crew chief Chad Knaus following Sunday's Daytona 500 post-qualifying inspection at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. "We understand NASCAR's position," Hendrick said. "Our expectations for the team remain high. It's a deep, championship-caliber group and they'll step up this weekend." Darian Grubb, lead engineer for the Nos. 24 and 48 Hendrick Motorsports teams, will immediately assume Knaus' at-track duties in preparation for the Feb. 19 Daytona 500. "It's obviously disappointing to miss the biggest race of the year, but I'm confident in Darian and the rest of my teammates," Knaus said. "There's been a lot of effort put into the Daytona 500 and I know the team will be successful with the support they'll receive from the entire organization." February 13, 2006

Jimmie & Chandra Johnson Announce Charitable Foundation DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006 -- Jimmie and Chandra Johnson announced today the creation of the “Jimmie Johnson Foundation” to aid charities that work with children and families.
“This is the culmination of a lot of hard work and a lot of thought by a lot of people,” Johnson said. “Chandra and I have been very blessed in our lives. We get to do what we enjoy doing in life. Not everyone is as fortunate. So we wanted to give something back. Chandra and I decided we wanted to help families, particularly children.” Johnson said the mission of the foundation is to fund five existing charities: the American Red Cross, Victory Junction Gang, Randy Dorton Memorial Fund, Make-A-Wish, and the Hendrick Marrow program.
“These aren’t the only charities that we plan to support but these are the ones we are concentrating on as we begin the foundation,” said Chandra Johnson. “We hope this grows in the coming years and will be a vehicle to promoting a lot of good in the community.” The foundation’s first activity is an eBay online charity auction that started at the beginning of the year. The auction includes racing and sports memorabilia, but will separate itself from most online auctions by offering fans the chance to bid on experiences with celebrities and professional athletes.
Mike Rucker of the Carolina Panthers as well as Marcus Giles and Mike Hampton of the Atlanta Braves joined the Johnson’s in Daytona for the foundation announcement.
“This is a really neat deal and I’m proud that I can come help Jimmie and Chandra launch this foundation,” said Rucker, an all-pro defensive end who is active in numerous charitable causes.
Giles and Hampton said they have become race fans and did not hesitate to support the Johnson’s efforts.
“This is a no-brainer,” said Giles. “We have a lot of fans in baseball and NASCAR has a lot of fans as well. If Jimmie and Chandra can combine both worlds I think this foundation will do a lot of good.”
Fans can bid on the souvenir items and experiences at www.ebay.com/jimmiejohnsonfoundation.
“We plan to continue updating the auction with items and experiences,” Johnson said. “One of the firsts initiatives we hope to complete is a bowling alley for the Victory Junction Gang Camp.”
The auction includes tickets to sporting events, impressive experiences from Hendrick Motorsports’ Jeff Gordon, Brian Vickers and Rick Hendrick. The experiences and items also include donations from Major League Baseball players Marcus Giles, Mike Hampton, Russ Ortiz and Cal Ripken, Jr; NFL players Mike Rucker, Howie Long, Brandon Short and Mark Rypien; NBA Chicago Bulls; bowler Parker Bohn, III; NHL player Mario Lemieux; Olympic gold medalists Dan Jansen and Mary Lou Retton; celebrities Nick Lachey, Tracy Lawrence, Freddy Holliday and Kendra Bentley Holliday from the Amazing Race 6 and professional poker player Annie Duke.
In addition to the auction, 1,000 commemorative coins were produced. The coins have the foundation logo on one side and "Inaugural Fundraiser” with the official launch date “2-11-06" on the other. The coins may be purchased for a donation of $50 or more at www.jimmiejohnsonfoundation.org. All proceeds will benefit the foundation. February 12, 2006
