Scott Speed (No. 84 Red Bull Toyota) was given a tall order when handed the reins of the No. 84 car for the final five races of the season. The team wanted to give Speed the opportunity for seat time before his full-season debut in 2009, but at the same time needed him to perform well enough to keep the car in the top 35 in the owner’s standings. All cars in the top 35 are guaranteed a starting spot for not only the rest of this season, but for the first five races of next year.
It’s very important for us to have Scott run the final five Cup races of the season, so we have a good idea for how his performance level is going to stack up, said Red Bull Racing Vice President and General Manager Jay Frye. He obviously exceeded our expectations in both the ARCA and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, but the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is a different animal and he’s learning the challenges that come with racing in Cup.
Scott’s also managed to stay inside the top 35, which we know is a tough battle, and we’re hoping we can remain inside the top 35 for the rest of the year.”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 22, 2008) – NASCAR has issued penalties, suspensions and fines to the No. 83 team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rules infractions found on Tuesday during a Martinsville post-race inspection at the NASCAR Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C.
The car was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-2.1-D (exterior sheet metal body parts did not meet the specified minimum thickness) of the 2008 NASCAR rule book.
As a result, both the crew chief, Kevin Hamlin, and the car chief, Craig Smokstad, have been suspended indefinitely from NASCAR. Additionally, Hamlin has been fined $100,000.
Driver Brian Vickers and owner Dietrich Mateschitz have been penalized with the loss of 150 driver and 150 owner points, respectively.

After a career finish of 9th in Sunday’s race at Kansas, AJ Allmendinger is officially out of the #84 car for Red Bull Racing. Scott Speed and Mike Skinner will share that ride for the remainder of this season.
Red Bull Racing Team announces Mike Skinner and Red Bull development driver Scott Speed to replace AJ Allmendinger in the No. 84 for the rest of the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. The No. 84 currently sits 33rd in owners’ points. “The schedule we put together is in the best interest of both Red Bull Racing Team and AJ’s plans for the future,” said RBRT Vice President and General Manager Jay Frye. Allowing Mike Skinner and Scott Speed to share the No. 84 for the balance of the season helps our team continue developing our program for the future.” Mike Skinner, who drove the No. 84 Red Bull Toyota for five races earlier in the 2008 season, will take the reins of the No. 84 at the NSCS races in both Talladega and Charlotte. Red Bull development driver Scott Speed will drive the No. 82 Red Bull Toyota at Charlotte on October 11 – the same weekend he attempts to clinch the ARCA RE/MAX Series championship in Toledo. Speed will then take over driving duties of the No. 84 at Martinsville, Atlanta, Texas, Phoenix and Homestead.
